My understanding is that production of most oled displays is done using strips of oled, roughly phone-width. I suppose they process the image to smooth discontinuities across strips. LG televisions have issues with uneven brightness in oled-strips as well. Still an odd result.

Panasonic OLED TVs (which use exactly the same LG Panels) don't suffer as much from this.
