The problem with JSON and XML based file formats is the tendency to require further parsing to decode values from strings. A universal interchange file format would have the ability to express all common data types through the composition of atomic values and containers.
Is the world ready to freeze in-memory runtime representations of complex structured data? I’m skeptical of this thesis.

These are not "just" in memory representations, it is a true serialization system that guarantees binary compatibility across systems and allows fields to be added/removed (thru a v-table mechanism). ~20 teams at Google (+Facebook and many others) trust it with their data :)

I also don't think that one solution can fit all. Specifically as the needs for data representation vary strongly based on individual use cases. A platform which helps people evaluate and pick a solution fitting their needs, could be a huge gain for our industry.
