The problem with JSON and XML based file formats is the tendency to require further parsing to decode values from strings. A universal interchange file format would have the ability to express all common data types through the composition of atomic values and containers.

Is a spec in the works?

I’ve been experimenting with a C#/Python family syntax encompassing these ideas for a very long time, but parts remain elusive.

There's
@EricLengyel 's http://openddl.org/ (and http://opengex.org/ ), though there are commas in there. It has local and global references and a bitwise definition of floats (which is important for round-trips and NaN/Infs). -
Came here to suggest Eric's work...

Have you looked at Protobufs and Thrift yet? I've found them to be great tools for data interchange between languages, albeit with some added complexity

came here to say this. "sounds like he wants protobufs"

So what you really want is a pointer that isn't bound to local memory, eg there needs to be some way to point to ANY data, local or remote, that's protocol, data link, etc agnostic

I like YAML's references, and Protocol Buffers' support for all the important fundamental types. A mashup of those with a JSON-like text form with the dang comma thing fixed would be lovely.

Have this exact problem right now.. we're making a new data format from server to client. I had an allergic reaction when I saw the parser.
