How does this ruin Shenmue though? Because you have to click one icon to launch the game instead of another icon? And BTW that other icon has never launched any prior Shenmue game.

This is inaccurate, Steam works fine with Xbox Live, https://www.pcgamer.com/killer-instinct-on-steam-will-support-cross-play-with-windows-10-and-xbox-one/ … If Activision didn´t want to do it, it´s not on Valve or Microsofts to force it.
-
To be clear, Steam doesn’t block network traffic between platforms or other stores. No PC store ever has. What’s locked down is access to the account system, friend system, and cloud saves so that they only work on PC games launched by Steam.

"The statement implies Activision made the call to keep PC players who bought the game from different storefronts separate." But Valve bad. Uh huh.
-
Yet, after that moment, Activision never released another Call of Duty game on Steam.

“Epic is bad for taking these Steam features away from us” is a catchy meme, but the real problem is that Valve locked down their social ecosystem features like friends to Steam and tied it to their 30% tax to lock gamers and developers into a single store.
-
There you go again, Valve didn´t lock anything, they provide features for they Plataform as any plataform holder does. You calling a "Tax" don´t change the fact that they provide means to get 100%.
