The point is, if Valve struck an exclusive deal before, just how many other times did they do that over the years?

Technically, Steam has a ton of exclusives because devs decide if they want to sell somewhere else. But for now, until another deal is found: "1" Steam has no need to strike exclusivity deals due to being a good service. Out for quite some time, with old, good games in the store.

Yes, now and for some years Valve had no need for exclusive deals, but they did in their early days. And yes, there are other deals that were made, but I can't prove them since I only know about them due to clients I have in my datacenter that have been developers for decades.

There was no competition in the early days so why would they have need for exclusive deals?

Competition with physical sales, also with other digital stores, doing exclusives would have also gained them more users. Here is an example of Valve doing an exclusive deal in their early days https://forums.introversion.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=40203 …

You're really going to pretend like an indie 2005 exclusive - a deal initiated by the dev to save them financially when no other PC platforms existed - is remotely like epic outright paying AAA devs and publishers to keep games off other stores in 2019.

Actually it is exactly the same thing, in all cases the exclusivity deals were made to increase the user base of a new store.

Oh so now Epic's deals are to increase the user base lol! How quickly we've deviated from their good guy crusade to give devs a better revenue split

You seriously don't see how getting the user base is all a part of the ultimate game to get better revenue split? The crusade wouldn't get anywhere without having users buying the game.

No I think the end game is all about increasing and retaining users and the revenue split is good PR. User count gives leverage to change the split again to their liking some day. However Tim has maintained the revenue split is their sole purpose.https://twitter.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1121218551342350336?s=20 …

If Steam committed to a permanent 88% revenue share for all developers and publishers without major strings attached, Epic would hastily organize a retreat from exclusives (while honoring our partner commitments) and consider putting our own games on Steam.

Of course we’re building a profitable business for Epic here too, as we said in the launch announcement:https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/announcing-the-epic-games-store …

It's only natural for consumers to have pushback when from their perspective their options are being limited, and being limited to a categorically worse platform. One that did not and still does not have some basic functions of a STORE, let alone a platform.

I understand, but it seems like that's the ONLY thing that matters since you clearly don't care about consumer choice. It should go w/o sayin that's why many are upset with you.
