Here’s a tweet storm on the topic of “Why Exclusives”?https://twitter.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1143669644877815810 …

This question gets to the core of Epic’s strategy for competing with dominant storefronts. We believe exclusives are the only strategy that will change the 70/30 status quo at a large enough scale to permanently affect the whole game industry.

So your answer to breaking the 70/30 is to just buy games out, lower competition by locking them to you. While having a subpar store that doesn't come anywhere near close to Steams features? Why not just let games go on both EGS and Steam? (1/2)

Or are you just afraid that nobody would want to purchase from your store? I mean years ago you complained about Microsoft doing this very same thing and now here you are doing it. Oh well is what it is I guess.. (2/2)

We believe that there’s no set of features which Epic, or any other store, could add that would be so revolutionary as to lead to a large-scale move of gamers from a dominant storefront to a new one.

We believe the lock-in effect of having a large library of games on a dominant storefront is more powerful than features, and hence a dominant store can only be challenged through exclusives. Here’s an article where Bill Gates explores a similar topic:https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/24/18715202/microsoft-bill-gates-android-biggest-mistake-interview …

Ah I see so instead of Steam being the dominant store. You want to be the dominant store? While I agree that makes perfect sense as a good business decision. That's just trading one devil for another. Seems rather pointless. I have 1,793 games on Steam. Why would I move to EGS?

Yes I am aware. It's been obvious since day one. Just would like him to be honest and say it. Instead of trying to frame as it's good for gamers.

Oh yes of course we’re working to build a profitable store business for Epic based on our 12% store fee. Said so in the launch announcement here:https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/announcing-the-epic-games-store …

Yeah I just don't see the point in using EGS. You keep skating around that question very conveniently. Why should I as a gamer use your store? It lacks features, provides annoyances to the end user and games cost exactly the same. Your exclusives did net me money back from refund

Not to whiteknight, but Tim admitted in this thread, that egs lacks some critical features, but argues that those features wouldn’t change much in terms of acquiring users. And since those features need time to be added anyway why not start growing with exclusives right away.

Not saying that your idea is wrong, i believe that it is healthy that there is a competitive market out there, but what about those people that don't want to fill their desktop with multiple launchers? I was interested in buying Metro Exodus and Division 2

From the moment those 2 became your exclusives well instead of a small portion of profit that would go to the devs through steam, from me they will get nothing because thnaks to you i'm not buying them, plus i'm sure that some people did excatly the same, not that you care
