The authors of a creative work have an unquestionable right to decide what to do with it. If they choose (or they delegate the decision to a publisher who chooses) to release on a store that pays them significantly more, that’s their right.

Pays them cash upfront for exclusivety or taking a smaller cut? How delusional are you? 😂

Both are fair competition. Developers value having certainty about their revenue from a game, and also value getting a large share of the revenue. These are business with lots of expenses and many mouths to feed.

How'd you feel if the largest & best store on PC started paying for exclusivity? Would you consider that 'fair competition'?

Steam’s the largest PC store and already has PC exclusives such as DOTA2, Counterstrike, and Portal. Valve has every right to make deals with developers and publishers to secure more exclusives, just as Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Epic Games do!

I’d like to challenge critics to state what moral principle you feel is at stake. If it’s okay for one company to avoid the 30% Valve tax by selling exclusively through their own store, why is it wrong for multiple companies to work together to achieve the same goals?

Is escaping the 30% Steam tax a privilege reserved only for games made by powerful corporations? What moral principle prohibits smaller developers and publishers from making deals to get funding and lower 12% store fees, or prohibits Epic from offering them?

The Kickstarter situation is tricky because, as best as we understand Valve policy, the only way the developers can make Steam keys available to backers is if they offer their game for sale publicly to everyone on Steam with the store taking 30%.

If there were a way to deliver Steam keys to existing backers, the developers, publishers, and Epic would love to make that happen even after going exclusive, and we’d be happy to pay 30% for the keys. But as we understand it, Steam takes an all-or-nothing stance.

I certainly will never crowdfund anything again after the fiasco that was Phoenix Point. Truthfully, because of Epic's anti-consumerism, I won't buy anything on Epic - ever. (Of course now that Microsoft is screwing up Epic's exclusivitity deals , I can buy there.

"Steam takes an all-or-nothing stance" Rightfully so! Why exactly Valve should offer Steam keys to a game, that is only available on the Epic store? Again you make the anti-consumer deals and then you blame Valve for the negative impact.

"as we understand it"...Have you tried, I don't know, TALK to Valve? With all these exclusivity deal you and the publishers don't seem to be interested in talking to people. Just talking and explaining the situation beforehand could've prevented much of a backlash.

It matters not what Valve chooses to do with their store keys distribution. What matters here is that Epic is forbidding devs from selling their products on Valve's store, while offering an infinitely worse service itself. And that's bullshit of the highest caliber.
