Someone "at the top" decides, and then people are forced. And as you can see, people don't like it. Why not look for a method that would please publishers, developers and, above all, gamers - customers (they spend their money!). Look at Metro, Shenmue. Better combine, not divide.
-
One of the problem is that customers generally don't care enough about developers and are happy to possible rationalise their buying habits with other causes. Something has to disrupt the network effect.

Even if it's hard for you to wrap your head around this, but: you don't pay them, they pay you!

You're right, the dev has to say yes too. That is why most of us are also upset at the devs and publishers that take you up on your Faustian bargain.
-
except the dev doesn't have to say yes, too. Someone on top says yes, and that's it, now it's an epic exclusive, the actual developers get no say in it at all.

In the case of kickstarted games where theyre advertised as being on multiple stores they do have a right to sell it where they want, but just because it's legal it doesnt mean its fine or moral. wouldn't be surprised if its an edge case regarding the law as well. awful behaviour

I hope you're not telling us your better cut for them is the... "only" better pay they get? If that was the case, it's Discord that should've dominated.

And we as consumers have a right to not buy a product.

The authors of a crowdfunded game have an OBLIGATION to their backers to keep promises, which includes releasing on platforms that were promised when initial funds were taken. They would not have a game to sell out to your store without their initial funding.
-
The kickstarter model is a bad one for consumers, rather the Patreon model if you accept that you are backing creators without the promise of anything.
