@TimSweeneyEpic If there's any chance Epic could take a serious look at adding ppc64le support to the engine (merging the existing patches) we're more than happy to rebase on the new engine, test, modify as needed. Also willing to work w/ Epic to get Fortnite on ppc64le/Linux!

So this would then lead to getting it so
@FortniteGame would be playable on Linux natively? It would be nice to have someone bother to make it support the Linux platform, even if it could have some sort of support for the Linux version of the cheat software. Epic needs to wake up1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

We'd definitely be willing to work on this w/ Epic at no charge if they'd then provide Linux builds for Linux/ppc64el. Linux/amd64 would basically "fall out" of that work, meaning it would come along for free. We expect CI is currently Windows? What say you,
@TimSweeneyEpic?

Wait, what does PowerPC have to do with any of this?

We want to see Fortnite come to our hardware.
@RaptorEng already ported the engine and even submitted the patches for review / merge, but no action was taken. There's a growing Linux on PowerPC community that wants to play both Fortnite and UT4 -- the latter works already...1 reply 1 retweet 4 likes -

Since enabling PowerPC de facto means enabling Linux, and we're willing to help make the former happen at no charge (it is after all in our interest to have ppc64le binaries available), that's the tie in.

The main point of what you are doing and saying here is that Linux support would come through from this as a byproduct which would be excellent, although how would the anti-cheat slot into this outcome, as that is the main issue, make it happen you'd be loved :D

First things first.
Our boards have some technology that could be quite useful for anti-cheat -- basically we have technology that could remotely attest to software versions running on the machine -- kernel, userspace, and game version. Done right, less hackable than Windows!2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Yeah course, I'm just thinking about how it would look when things are re-implemented on Linux for say
@FortniteGame for example which can load all the way into the game, but when you get on the bus kicks you out etc. With Vulkan the future of seamless experience could be epic!1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Absolutely -- we've run Engine 4.20 on POWER with the open AMD driver stack, UT4 works fairly well for the most part (some UT4 bugs are present of course, but that's because the game itself needs a proper update to the newer engine -- they happen on Windows too w/ 4.20).

Is this hardware still being manufactured? Thought the line ended with Mac’s move to x86, except for IBM mainframes...

Not only is it still being manufactured, it's growing rapidly as an open alternative to increasingly locked/Windows-centric x86 HW! Here's a product that went GA a week ago, this is a desktop system that competes directly with Intel's mid-range segment.https://twitter.com/RaptorCompSys/status/1124484873614499840 …

@TimSweeneyEpic we'd be happy to send Epic one of our demo desktop boxes for evaluation...just let us know. That would be client side, the workstation / CI server boxes are much larger and have up to 176 threads / 2TB RAM. UE4 builds and cooks fast on those!1 reply 1 retweet 9 likes - 1 more reply
