Command lines were too hard, so we got menus. Menus grew too big big, so we got menu search. Menu search was too awkward, so menu searches started to run their target actions. Now we have menu searches as a weird command line that doesn't support parameters or scripting.

If we completed the cycle, I think we'd move to programming syntax (function calls, etc) for commands, Intelliense-style completion-assistance of commands, and menus with tooltips that show their underlying commands.

I have often thought how much more powerful the command line would be if everything was s-expressions instead of ad-hoc white space separated parsing.

Lisp machines literally had a UI management layer that made menus and command line interfaces spring from the same tagged UI types called presentation types. Not SEXP based but had a disciplined parsing framework. REPL and WIMP in one called CLIM.

I thought I could make my engine better by hooking up most stuff to a GUI. This just led me to design the data in a way that favored the GUI and made otherwise programming with it cumbersome.

Agreed. Command line with powerful intelligent autocomplete is near perfect for an experienced user. Needs categorization and grouping, full substring find not just prefix. Would be amazing to use tag style search instead of just hierarchical grouping.
