A hill I will die on: curated apps stores, with platform owners making decisions around things that will not be allowed at all, are a massive step forward and have huge benefits to actual users, for security, privacy, ease of use and safety.

I see a good argument for stores with strong curation. Why give platform makers a monopoly on stores, distribution, and curation though?

Platform makers have a technical advantage when it comes to sandboxing/security.

The OS provides sandboxing and security at runtime for all running apps, whatever store they came from. So where’s the platform advantage? That they have special expertise in creating static analysis tools for submitted apps? If so, why not decouple those tools from stores?

Platform creators are the only ones who can decide which APIs are public and make changes in response to threats. Additionally, standardized review processes are a good thing.

These slight advantages don’t suffice to justify platform distribution monopolies. This is a $100B/year business with store operating costs below $10B/year, so you’re giving away over $20B = 20% of industry revenue to monopolies for a couple thousand store coders and reviewers.

Where did you get that 10B/years number from? Cause your trash store doesnt cost 10B/years doesnt mean other stores that offering way more function and benefit also doesnt cost that much. Are you a share holder of Steam too? if not i dont see why you know how much it cost 1/2

Just tell us only one feature which is good for customers and that is better than steam. Don't say bullcrap of 88% money goes to developers because that money goes to publishers pocket.

It all depends on your particular contract, of course, but generally deals are structured in a way that more money for the publisher directly translates to more money for the developer.

How about a compromise? IMHO, platform creators SHOULD NOT get a cut of content purchased through apps, and should only be able to charge a capped fee for publishing to offset the costs of curation and review. Taking 30% of the sale total is extreme now that stores are mature.

YOu know that the more the store grow the more it cost to run and maintain right? SO i dont think what you saying is right. The more user Steam have the more servers they have to rent for all the cloudsaves data, more security and support staffs. 1/2
