A hill I will die on: curated apps stores, with platform owners making decisions around things that will not be allowed at all, are a massive step forward and have huge benefits to actual users, for security, privacy, ease of use and safety.

I see a good argument for stores with strong curation. Why give platform makers a monopoly on stores, distribution, and curation though?

Platform makers have a technical advantage when it comes to sandboxing/security.

The OS provides sandboxing and security at runtime for all running apps, whatever store they came from. So where’s the platform advantage? That they have special expertise in creating static analysis tools for submitted apps? If so, why not decouple those tools from stores?

A store should be transparent about what metrics they use to select curated content and provide specific feedback to devs when content is rejected. I think the aggregated nature of Metacritic scores could be a good metric to judge submissions since it shows critical consensus.

Developers should try selling their software directly to consumers without stores. Maybe by hiring youtube influencers to play their games. Then they can keep 100 percent of their money. What do they need 3rd party stores & distribution for really?

Because all problems related to payment and distribution of the game falls on the shoulder of the platform, not the developers. Devs don't have time to deal with credit card rejections, refunds and other administrative tasks.

You like asking why can't I buy KFC in a McDonald? You make your own hardware for developer to develop on. To ensure the game run properly on it and meet the quality you decide, that's why only Micosoft's store on XBox and PlayStation store on PlayStation.

PC gaming market on the other hand is like a big open market on the street, everyone can put their store on it. But only mafias will limit something they don't own to sell on their own store. Good competition will be product being sold in multiple stores and consumer can choose

There is generally no good economic argument for monopoly. (monopsony on the other hand...) Anyway, I think there’s some viability to the argument that a platform can (and should) practice some ethical standards when determining what should be on a platform.

In a way an overly permissive platform can function as a means to create exclusion. Similar to the paradox of tolerance, extreme toleration of content might dissuade users from a platform. For example: if the epic store became inundated with anime games I’d probably stop using it
