So here’s the thing you guys don’t address here. Pc gaming becomes unmonopolized. Now customers are going to keep running into competing games going to incompatible storefronts, fragmenting is further. How the f does that help consumers? It’s fucking exclusives all the way down

A disambiguation of services and store is best for consumers. The stores will want walled gardens, but consumers want maximum flexibility. I thing in the spectrum of all existing viable/competitive players, Epic will prove actually most towards the consumer side of this.

The thing is Randy if you look at similar services for music, movies and books you are wrong. In books consumers have embraced a monopoly. In music they have embraced a drm free solution. In movies they have embraced cross silo compatibility (movies anywhere).

Yes. In order for that to happen, we need competitive viable stores. iTunes was not DRM free until Amazon came along, for example.

The solution is simple and already exists, it just needs some work - we need a universal games launcher we can plug our libraries into and access from a single app with minimal effort. LaunchBox does this fairly well, but needs user input to make it look attractive.

Would love to see launchers decoupled from storefronts and from payment methods, so everything can be mixed and matched. I think that’s where everything is ultimately going, just requires a pretty big shakeup.

It'll probably end up being a third party solution that'll sync your launcher libraries. Scrapers already exist for metadata to fill in the media for the games. What would make it next level are community features with forums that could probably operate the same as IMDb did.

@TimSweeneyEpic You should be pushing for a Movies Anywhere type service then for pc digital store fronts so launchers aren't important anymore. It's crazy how Hollywood figured this out but the gaming industry has to have all their own walled gardens everywhere.

I'd imagine the stores would remain separate to their respective launchers; it'd just be a frontend to play and talk about games. Not sure how it'd be monetized though... LaunchBox uses patreon to fund its development.
