A correction to what I said in this article: The decision to bring Metro Exodus to the Epic Games store exclusively was made by the publisher, not developer 4A Games. We’re grateful for both groups’ support for a very successful launch!https://www.pcgamesinsider.biz/industry-icon/68839/exclusives-free-games-and-fortnite-behind-the-scenes-on-the-epic-games-store-strategy/ …

When we’re in discussions with a publisher, sometimes we have a direct relationship with the developer and can seek their thoughts, but not always.

I doubt you’ll get a response to this. He claims gamers “don’t see” that they’re making the industry better when, in reality, they’re hurting it far more than helping. Yes creating a PR nightmare for these companies and gamers will continue to fight back. Will this work short 1/2

Full context: “They don't see the hardship of making a payroll and seeing the store suck out 30% of the revenue from it. It can be jarring to see the industry is changing in ways that are typically invisible to us as gamers." in order for it to actually benefit devs you'd need to sell more copies on Epic than on EVERY other platform. Which you won't because your user base hasn't reached those levels. So cut-and-dried you're hurting developers by reducing the amount of copy sales they make X% of.

We believe success comes primarily from the games themselves rather than stores. Tens of millions of gamers downloaded Origin for the first time to play Apex Legends, and the Epic launcher for Fortnite, for example. All of our experience so far supports this thesis.

Tim, we understand how payroll works. But the payroll is something for the DEVELOPERS to pay. Your exclusivity deals are benefitting the PUBLISHERS. If the game doesn't sell MORE then it really hurts developers, but your revenue split and cash bonus insulates PUBLISHERS.

Publishing deals split a game’s revenue between the developer and publisher according to an agreed-on formula. Any time Epic pays a publisher, that is revenue for the game that accrues to both. The publisher’s incentive to maximize their revenue aligns with the developer’s.

Maybe publishers should pay their devs better. Also, the customer doesnt see it, because they dont get any benefit. The gaming industry has proven time and time again, more money =/= better quality. And usually that's at the behest of the publisher wishes.

and by limiting where DEVELOPERS can make money to the one store you're limiting how much money the DEVELOPERS can make - as you said they're paid in royalties. The PUBLISHERS keep the bulk of your better revenue split. So it's INCREASING the hardship for Devs.

Except paid exclusives make it worse. Other than that, good effort so far.
