I like how i never heard steam fanboy before all of this lol. I personally hope it doesnt get content blocked, if im a steam user with 700 games i dont want to use another store for a game or have to wait 6 months to get it on steam. Doesnt seem “open” at all

That's the thing. I believe we should have the freedom to choose. Even with the way the revenue structures are we all agree those need to change. If Epic wanted to be at the forefront and make that a big message I would be celebrating that. As long as they did it in their lane

What’s more fundamental, though? Developer freedom to choose which stores to sell on, or customer freedom to buy any product at any store? The first derives from the developer’s creative freedom and ownership of the works they create.

The “right to buy any product at any store” isn’t a principle of any known philosophy or economic theory. And it would directly contradict developer freedom, by forcing creators to sell their works through stores against their will, regardless of store terms.

Steam’s 30% cut versus Epic’s 12% cut is just one point on the spectrum. What if another store took 50%? Should developers have to sell through that store too? What about 90%?

It's all comes across to me as if it's just a mad grab to get as big of an install base as possible in as short of an amount of time possible. You aren't earning the store it's place in the marketplace, you are trying to buy its place.

Yes, Epic is investing heavily to bring free games and exclusives to the store to bring in new gamers and grow the store customer base. Simultaneously we’re building lots of features, but are going full speed ahead on games without waiting. That’s the essence of our strategy.

Just pull back on the paying for exclusivity, let the store stand on its 88-12 revenue split, offer cheaper prices, get your feature put in asap, keep with the free games and one better, offer free games on the purchase of the franchises (BL3 gets you BL1 2 and Pre Sequel)

We considered that approach. We concluded it would be a noble way to build another store with 2% marketshare that has no lasting effect on 70/30 economics. We concluded that success requires handing together with others to foster a new store with exclusives.

Okay, so you know your store doesn't have the features we want yet, and you're still going to force us to use it if we want to buy the games we were already looking forward to before you got here, all because you want to make more money. Do you understand why we hate you now?

Yeah but now you've got a much bigger market share because of this strategy. But you've also lost a lot of good will. There is still time to change gears and benefit from the advantages you've gained so far. Just go noble now, going forward. Get the good will back

I think you could have reached out to devs and convinced them that being exclusive on your store was good without paying them to do so.

So a deal where devs get less money is better for you? What about the risk they have to take with switching to a new store?
