Developers own their work and have the right to decide how to publish it. When a developer chooses to sign with a publisher, they give the publisher that right in exchange for receiving some combination of funding and royalties.

I have only goodwill towards the people at Valve. My criticism of the 70/30 business model is simply that digital downloads have grown into a $100 billion annual business with enormous economies of scale, and the savings haven’t been passed on to developers.

Maybe you rather should have started that the other way around. And even if there will be benefits to consumers, what I doubt, it should be a matter of consumers choice, if they like to participate.
