Am I the only person who finds the terms Steam and Epic fanboy to be utterly stupid? It's cool to have a position in the conversation but calling someone a fanboy for having an opinion on it is retarded.

Buy the games you want where u want. If one of the platforms bothers you that much and are playing on windows 10 you are just ignorant.

I would say ignorance only comes in when a person willfully chooses to ignore growing criticisms of any particular corporation. The platform you choose based on preference or the OS you're on is completely irrelevant.

I think it's relevant as these systems are all doing the same thing. Primarily sniffing local dns cache and low level input for cheating primarily on the game side. On windows side they are doing it for advertising primarily.

That's a criticism of Microsoft and Windows. People that completely and willfully ignore that would be ignorant. Using Windows isn't the ignorance in an of itself. Make sense?

If I may digress: I often feel that Microsoft gets a disproportionate degree of flak for nearly everything they do. Not that they shouldn't be criticised, actually the opposite: I feel like all corporations deserve that level of scrutiny and suspicion.

I fully understand and could have chosen words better. I was trying to point out that the practice isn't exclusive to a platform. If we are concerned from the security and privacy stance then we have to consider that these acts are at the very base level of your interactions.

So, in our current environment, I think being completely private and not giving away any personal data is impossible. However, what we can do is try to research as best we can and choose wisely *who* gets our data. With that in mind, I tend to follow a train as best I can:

For example, If I would prefer not to provide any more information than possible to Tencent, Epic is 40% owned by Tencent, and Epic's client is accessing config data of competitor clients... That is something that would make me concerned.

Steam data is only sent to Epic when you explicitly choose to import Steam friends, and then only hashed user ids of friends are sent. The Steam file we read to import friends contains lots of other data (library contents etc) but this is not sent to Epic and never has been.

You aren't talking to an average consumer here... It's been demonstrated enough times that merely hashing isn't enough. It should not be accessed it AT ALL. I understand you are a game dev at heart, and not an InfoSec engineer, but this is a massive threat surface to exploit.

Thanks for the clarification on that. I think that it is functioning correctly with that clarification. I also appreciate the opportunity for additional distribution platforms on PC.

Well, "additional" is not the correct term here. You are forced to exchange one platform by another with @EpicGames exclusivity bullshit. So in the end, you still got stuck with just the same amount of available platforms or even less basically.
