And leaking our shit to Tencent is also pretty shady.

Tencent has absolutely no ability to compel Epic to provide access to any data, and Epic Games has a longer track record of operating independently than literally any other company running an independent PC game store.

We’ve updated the launcher so that the Steam file is only accessed after the user chooses to import Steam friends. The file on your computer belongs to you, not Valve, and when you import Steam friends, hashed user IDs are sent to preserve privacy.

Two users are only matched up and are offered to send friends invitations if both choose import Steam friends, hence matching requires opt-in on both sides.

except your launcher was sending the data before permission was given. it still does this without any opt-in. quit lying, fix your launcher, and fire the idiot that decided to bypass privacy protections instead of using the API like a legitimate company would do.

The Epic Games launcher has never sent any Steam data to Epic except when you explicitly choose to import your friends, and then it only sends hashed ids of friends.

that isn't what the packet captures have been showing. your collecting a lot more data than that long before any opt-in dialog appears. and i would still like to hear how you try to whitewash your companies decision to bypass steams privacy settings to collect this data.

That’s just not true. No Steam data is sent to Epic unless you explicitly choose to import friends. And it’s not Valve’s data, it’s your data on your computer. If you choose to import Steam friends, that’s your right.
