How so? Surely competition between stores is healthy, especially when it results in significant savings for developers (30% vs 12%), which can then be reinvested in future games or passed on to gamers.

The race to the bottom we’re combatting is the trend of stores and user acquisition platforms (like paid store ads, Facebook, and Google) consuming a large and growing portion of game revenue, leaving developers with ever less.

We try to make fun games and share the tools and tech we build so we can help other game developers succeed. We started serving developers with Unreal Engine in 1996, and now also provide online services and a store.

Tim, Epic has done a LOT of good. But you are turning down the dark path that so many before you have done. Show the community that you actually give a damn about them, and not just their money. Don't turn into the next EA.

Oh gosh no. I mean, if we were taking 30% and paying for exclusives, sure, we’d be yet another bunch of greedy biz goons. But we’re introducing dramatically better terms and are doing all that’s necessary to gain traction and bring devs permanent gains.

Online services, cross-platform features, a free game every two weeks, and exclusives are all necessities for achieving a critical mass. (There are other necessities, and we’re working on those over time.)

Y’all have every right to flame Epic for the inconvenience of multiple storefronts. We’re prepared to take it, because we believe it would be MUCH worse for the industry if Epic fails to gain traction, leaving developers and gamers stuck paying this 30% store tax forever.

Gain traction by being better. No dividing. But in the end, it's all about the money, like always. Doesn't matter if users doesn't like it, as long as the money keep rolling in.

@TimSweeneyEpic Did you happen to see the news about a developer from 4A games saying they would drop PC as a platform if Metro Exodus doesn't sell well?

I'm guessing "PC piracy will drive 4A Games to consoles" just like it drove Epic a couple of years ago, according to their statements. It has nothing to so with anti consumer bullshit /s

Honestly I would be much more receptive to the @EpicGames Store if @utgame 4 was finished. It felt like the older, hardcore Epic fans were left behind for the new @FortniteGame crowd. That's the kind of exclusive that would genuinely be appealing.

That is, all the care about the developers and not about any ordinary gamer? I really hope that Metro Exodus will fail in sales-it will save the industry from your fascism!

Doesn't matter to me either way. I started exclusively pirating when PC went digital only. I have never and will never use or give money to Steam, Epic, GOG, uplay, origin, or any other digital distribution "service". I am glad about Metro though since it upsets the Valve drones

Congratulations you literally are just a drain on the marketplace. Piracy itself isn't an inherent evil, like people who have to resort to pirating old games because the publisher forgot them long ago. But you and people Like you just sour the entire argument.

If these tactics are how you think you’ll “gain traction,” then your 12% promised land is a fantasy. Entice people to use your platform rather than coerce them. Give people value—not a hostage situation.
