Did Unity just prohibit all cloud-hosted multiplayer games? You couldn’t operate Fortnite, PUBG, or Rocket League under these terms.pic.twitter.com/NXy6yjS5ni

We put enormous effort into the Unreal Engine EULA to ensure everyone has access to the full source, can share all their changes with other licensees (including commercially), and can operate lasting services and business around the engine with confidence.

We specifically make the UE4 EULA apply perpetually so that when you obtain a version under a given EULA, you can stay on that version and operate under that EULA forever if you choose.

Sorry, what Unity is doing? They're guilty of having a poorly worded ToS, sure, but this is on  Improbable. The Dec 5th change to ToS was a language change. The rules were in place and Improbable was told they were in violation.

Agreed. I posted this before the 25M funding announcement. As soon as I saw that it really seemed like a coordinated PR stunt.

...with unity was compliant and would have investigated the situation instead of causing all this panic and stress for their devs.

Panic and stress are sometimes appropriate. My plain reading of the ToS update is that Unity games are now banned from using server-side SDKs or being distributed by stores unless approved by Unity. That’s a drastic change that breaks Steam, GOG, Epic Games store.

Joachim Ante’s clarification only stated that it’s okay to for Unity devs to run Unity server-side on generic hosting services like AWS. There was no statement that server-side SDKs or distribution through stores is okay.

Yeah, it definitely means clarification and I certainly hope that is not the intent. My understanding is their SDK made it considered a "platform" instead of a hosting service, streaming site, or store / marketplace. If that makes sense. It is difficult to articulate. Haha

The business implications of “Unity + SDK = new platform requiring permission” are colossal, though! That means no Steamworks, no AWS server-side SDKs, no GameSparks SDKs, no Epic Games Service APIs, no friends support, no chat, no matchmaking...
