The state of PC nerd tech is amazing now! 16 TFLOP GPUs, 240 Hz gaming monitors, 8K Dell workstation monitors, 12-core consumer CPUs, 1200 DPI mice, crisply-clicking mechanical keyboards. Why isn’t there more excitement about these these things?

Exactly! People always are shocked to hear a computer was expensive, but don’t bat an eye at a much more expensive car. It’s worth the investment if it’s what you spend your time doing. Faster and better hardware means more productive work and less limits.

I remember first using UE4 without knowing anything about gamedev, running it on a very old and slow iMac which caused the editor to crash at random every few minutes, but I still loved every minute of figuring things out and playing at a glorious 10 FPS.

You are right, though car and equipment loans qualifications are wildy different. I would buy a pack of lollipops for a $1 and sell them 25c each from elementary to middle school. And at that time, I was able to get most things kids my age wanted. Rinse and repeat.

Haha! I did the same thing w lollipops! Bought for 15ct, sold for 25ct out of my locker. When it became more popular than the school’s candy at the cafeteria, teachers told me to stop. So much for preparing you for the “real world” heh.

Ditto for a computer chair! People have no issue spending hundreds or even thousands on a mattress, but flip on a chair that is $500-1k, and used nearly as much as a bed.

Most developers have their employer buy equipment for them, I think. Also, it's not that you need a 12 TFLOPS gpu to render an emacs buffer...

I'd say most people's circumstances are different. I used to be able to spend my disposable income on those kinds of things, and still do when the universe is in alignment. But now that I have kids, a lot less of my income is disposable.

I used to work in glasses manufacturing actually, and it's incredibly overpriced.
