I don't know much about Boost.Ranges specifically, but serious question: are you unaware that many of use would rather eat glass than include Boost in our projects? It's a highly divisive library at best. Maybe ranges is the rare jewel in there, but it doesn't seem like a...

I'll answer that with another question: have you ever appreciated having standard smart pointers, or do you know anybody who appreciated having them? Did you know they were in Boost first? I'm not glossing over the real problems Boost has, but a lot of good has come of it.

In Italy we say, even fascists did some good things. Now, smart_ptr absolutely is not one of them, they are conceptually dangerous and overenginneered as std anything, but I do not doubt that something good in boost does exist. Still, not worth it. Engineering is about tradeoffs

I’m not even sure about unique_ptr. Maybe without boost it would’ve been done as a language feature instead? And maybe if so we wouldn’t have needed all the genera move semantics complexity?

Why you feel that so many things would be better implemented in the core language, even a simple library type like unique_ptr. Proof that dereferencing a unique_ptr requires 10 function calls, please. General move semantics are helpful for many types beyond unique_ptr.

If unique_ptr was implemented in the language you'd get some kind of syntax, faster compile times, maybe better optimizations. And most importantly it would be much simpler to understand.

Your arguments about better compile times, optimizations and syntax for unique pointer are speculative without any coubter example. If you don’t want to be taken prolemic just scetch one implementation and show where it does better than a library implementation.

Why is the burden of proof on me here, and not on the people who decided to add unique_ptr via a library (along with move semantics)? See aras' post about built in vs library ranges for one example of the real costs you get from the "everything is a library" approach.

The people that decided to add unique pointer had that meeting. You were just not attending. And most of what I have read from you is complaining on a high level without any solution. Nor even grappeling or discussing paths for any solution.

Okay, please link to where they benchmarked and justified that a library solution was the best way forward for unique_ptr. If they did the work to evaluate the options rigorously, surely there's a doc somewhere?

Atomic reference counted pointers as a core language feature is sheer madness. Low level pointers or managed pointers with GC are all reasonably proven in various contexts.

Not that crazy. IIRC python, lua and swift have built in reference counting as far as I know. I'd guess popularity is at least on par with fully GC. Maybe my info is old.
