Nobody seem to have mentioned that the lock down is partially a security feature of the platform. If they open it up, malware apps could very well run rampant. iOS is not a power user platform primarily. Still, the tax is a bit steep.

No, iOS is secured by technical infrastructure: a great kernel, user permissions model, and the best OS security team on the planet. Monopolizing app distribution AND DIGITAL COMMERCE has nothing to do with OS security.

This is a good article that provides a lot more backstory on this whole thing (including a quote from yourself!). Long story short, it's about who needs whom, and whether stores that rent-take are overstepping:https://stratechery.com/2018/fortnite-skips-google-play-netflix-explores-bypassing-itunes-big-names-and-long-tails/ …

I think rent seeking is an acceptable business practice as long as customers and developers can choose among competing stores, as is possible on PC. It’s rent seeking together with blocking all competing stores on a device that is outrageous.

This is interesting... Why you don't do the same to release Fortnite on Google Play and Apple's store?

To redirect payments on your own services to avoid Google or Apple fees?

30% for middlemen who mostly run digital distribution services is wayyy too much.

I would still release my game on Steam since it’s a superior platform

Even 15% is a lot. They don't have competition, but now they better lower their tax. A little is better then nothing, and you probably wouldn't have made your users download from your website if it was 10%?
