The particular language isn’t the point. If French were still the preeminent language, everyone could learn to recognize its diacritics and ligatures as identifiers. But no human can be expected to learn the 10,000’s of Unicode identifier characters across all languages.

Yeah and I would dislike this take no matter the language. Anything would be easier if we would just limit it to one language. If you're team just wants ascii in their project use a linter, I don't see why a programming language should limit itself to that.
