Microsoft had an amazing set of initiatives underway with transactional NTFS, transactional file system support in PowerShell, and transactional memory in C#. Transactions are a great future direction for operating systems, and are essential for future persistent memory efforts.

If Windows NT architect Dave Cutler is called on to save Windows from obsolescence (for the third time!) then the mission is to prepare the kernel and win32 for transactions and persistent memory.

I honestly don't know why they're deprecating these.

One of the C# devs said they dropped transactions because they were hard, language-impacting, and didn’t bring immediately achievable benefits to existing apps. All totally valid short-term reasons.

Nothing of that will matter if you keep your platform and your main game title Windows exclusives and ignore the most free platform there is. Microsoft will eventually lock down Windows 10 and then everybody is screwed. Game industry needs contingency plan.

I’m not sure why kernel transactions are needed for persistent memory. With PM, you want memory to act like disk, not vice versa, because of corruption recovery. We already have fast userspace database transactions. sqlite basically.

“We already have fast userspace database transactions. sqlite basically.” What is the metric used to make above claim about SQLite?

I know this is not directly related but at some parts of MS, they are still working on transactions outside databases like in Microsoft Orleans. while this is not the same thing, it means that they know it's useful.
