Ideas? I get that <B>bold</B> is the standard, but new HTML tags can't be user-defined because tags like <BR> don't require closing, then things like & aren't tags at all. Thus HTML isn't even proper XML. Holy grail is: one static syntax for all things!

TeX syntax isn’t context-free and is heavily optimized for mathematical markup (e.g. applying attributes to single letters). So it’s hard to apply TeX lessons to more general markup.

The second one is easier to read visually. The lines inside 1 and 3 compete with the <>creating visual tension. 4 creates a disconnect the brain reads as "I feel and be bold today". Even in code, language should not create more confusion.
