Lightweight parser combinators that don't require a lot of ceremony to setup and use might hit the spot. They might be more verbose than regular expressions, when scaling up they pretty quickly become easier for a human to comprehend than regexps

I often find regex readability goes up when people go to the trouble of naming capture groups (assuming it's a good name). It often gives me an anchor into an otherwise confusing jumble of characters.

A regex visualizer would go a long way, too. The Internet has made a couple that look decent.
