Definitely. You mean the movement component or player controller? The controller can be used as a black box, while the movement component needs to be understood. I wrote my own movement using network facilities, and did so with lots of control and simplicity.

Ahh yes probably for your requirements, we work on mobile VR. Lots of control and simplicity is good. I think UE4 has a lot of experience but the 'black box' needs to graduate to a transparent modular thing (I seem to remember it even says so in its comments)

Yeah I totally agree there. I bumped my head against some systems quite a bit, but the core netcode and authority systems are somewhat straightforward. The player controller is also extensible, but they could definitely document it better

So sorry to ask but was the network stack UNET? We didn't like that one either.

I use UNET at work for local multiplayer in XR. I tried PUN and photon bolt as well. Photon is a scam if your game scales. All of them have trade-offs that haven't been an issue in Unreal, especially in regards to price and code management for P2P with authoritative host

Thx. Does it work if you don't have a host for WiFi hotspot play?

Okay. What I meant is that can the host run on a client device or must it be a separate server (ie another ip address)

With unet I can make the host run on a client device, yes.

The UE netcode has become less pretty but way more scalable and efficient than the UE1 days. Across all games the hosting savings from net code optimization is astronomical.

Agreed. Definitely UE4 has had this nailed for some time. It was one of the reasons we learnt the platform. Also I love how standardized the humanoid animation is in UE4. Standards are good IMHO.

The main thing holding us back with UE4 is that Android is still a second class citizen. With Unity we know that VR is supported fully and that they are the incumbent on Android. UE4 is much better now that the forward renderer is available so hopefully there is more progress.

If I may, the standout replication feature for me is the ability to nest structs and replicate a single variable to uniformly sync a state. My predictive physics system would be a mess without it.
