The core Enlightenment principle supporting free speech is that the best counter to a bad idea is a good idea, with both openly expressible and debatable. This stabilizes society by making everyone think and engage. To censor is to divide and polarize.

In many cases it's not just "ideas they disagree with" though, when some people are being shut down for using their platform to actively spread lies about people, that then inevitably lead to large numbers of people threatening them with violence

I mean, even the United States that has some of the most rigorous free speech protections in the West, puts some reasonable limits on free speech. (incitement to murder for example, that's illegal in the US unless I'm remembering wrong, no?)
