The core Enlightenment principle supporting free speech is that the best counter to a bad idea is a good idea, with both openly expressible and debatable. This stabilizes society by making everyone think and engage. To censor is to divide and polarize.

Not every belief needs a debate: Does this mean you are going to let the creators of "Hatred" use the UE4 logo in their mass-shooting game and post on the UE4 forums again? I mean, we did just outright ban them for "expressing bad ideas" without any attempt at debate after all.

They’re free to use Unreal Engine as a tool for expressing their ideas. They’re not free to use the Epic logo as an implication of company support for their ideas. This is my understanding of the proper coexistence of freedom and commerce.

The enlightenment thinkers were trolls too. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson wrote tons of material under pseudonyms. Trolling is a debate form.

Empirically, reasoned debate does not seem to actually be effective at countering hate when it's too ingrained.https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2017/05/03/483264173/hate-speech-and-the-misnomer-of-the-marketplace-of-ideas …

Here, an elite journalist bases their argument on the presumption that other people are stupid and can’t be trusted to make decisions about their beliefs. This view is in direct opposition to the principles upon which modern liberal democracies were founded.

Demagogues have learned to manipulate people & “open exchange” to the point where it’s no longer about the strength of the idea but about how the idea assuages fear. Some ideas are always reprehensible and should not be given consideration. Deplatforming is sometimes necessary.

For honest debate, sure. But giving someone a platform for propaganda is irresponsible and extremely hard to counter.

If all sides in a debate are committed to rational discussion, then sure. looking at the US right now, this is clearly not the case. Some actors have weaponised free speech and are using it to spread lies and harass.

The problem with some free speech is that by expressing it you suppress others. For example hate speech stops the targeted minorities from participating in the discussion. You see how much companies and communities have trouble with moderation. Its not easy!
