30% was an amazing deal back in the early 2000’s when Valve pioneered the digital distribution model. Back then, retail publishers took 60-80% and accepted very few games.

This was before CDNs could serve PB/s of data at commodity rates, before cloud services and commodity datacenters, and before online commerce was a well-established business model.

Now digital distribution is a $100,000,000,000/year business across all platforms, but all of the past 15 years of gains in economies of scale have gone to the distributors, rather than developers.
