So will @FortniteGame only install on Oreo or will it also install on the 90% of other Android phones that don't have the install-time popup and thus leaving millions of insecure phones open to be exploited by malware?https://twitter.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1026223580856639488 …

Fortnite supports pre-Oreo versions of Android. You can turn off Unknown Sources” right after installing. It’s a shame it took Google 10 years to implement the nice new security flow, but the solution isn’t to reward them with a store monopoly.

You can do this but the problem is a lot of users will not. Google are at fault for funneling users, sure, but relying on your customers to re-secure their phones when they don't need to is creating a gaping hole that doesn't need to exist for the sake of a single application.

The reason the GPS exists is mainly because the internet is full of garbage that infects devices and having a store app shows users that this is the prime, secure, version. What is stopping others from taking your APK and injecting crap into it?

Anybody can take any APK, modify it to include malware, and distribute it on a phishing site. This is true already of all APKs from Google Play, and is unrelated to the original source of the APK.

My point is, people by default will go to the GPS to find the app, like they always have. Since it won't be there, they will likely just search for "Fortnite" in Google and hope that they get to your site and not some other dodgy one.

This status quo trades away the freedom of users and developers for just security theatre. For the rest of my life I’d regret it if Epic had all of this reach and opportunity with Fortnite now, and we didn’t use it to advance the openness of all platforms.

I grew up programming an Apple ][, and the first thing that popped up on boot was a BASIC programming prompt. Nowadays, if you want to develop, you have to fill out a form asking a corporation for permission. It’s a bizarre, control freak trend that needs reversing.

Android is the most open of the smartphone platforms and is getting better with each release. The final step to a vibrant Android ecosystem requires consumer software releases. Actually doing it, not giving Google Play a de facto monopoly while waiting for perfection.

Congratulations on discouraging future platform owners from following suit.

Fortnite is doing on Android exactly what open platforms are intended to do....
