The two security features Google Play provides beyond web-installed APKs are the malware scanner that runs during app submission, and the ability to quickly delist apps that are discovered to be bad. Both could be opened up to all software sources rather easily.

Real question here, you said according to an article I read, that 30% is basically too high for technically doing nothing, but do you think there would be an android 8.0 as open and as secure as you want it to be if they don't have income?
-
You said you where ok with that in consoles because they sold hardware below cost, but android is free, even though it clearly has a cost as you know, fortnite is also free, but it has a cost.

True but, well, that is what you 'pay' them for with the 30%, among other things. If you don't want them to take a cut you have to bear the cost of replicating the services they provide. The malware scanner and app removal are two of those things.
-
I also don't really want "app removal" to be a thing outside of a curated store anyway. That can turn into "not about malware" very quickly.

Honestly, I'm sure the reason Google hasn't done this sooner is because it would guarantee a loss of money. Think about it: if you could see if an apk was no good before you install it, that would make companies more confident in distribiting apps from their own sites.

Not sure where I was going with this. Sounded right in my head.

Google's cut is monstrous. I hope that gets dialed back soon.

But do you really think everyone won’t see all the warnings about untrusted sources and get worried and because of that won’t install it. I mean parents may think this is sketchy
