“Preventing cryptocurrency mining on Android is crucial because untethered mining operations can easily overheat or destroy batteries —or even devices if the battery case deforms, leaks, or catches fire.” That’s not how hardware works, guys!https://twitter.com/BleepinComputer/status/1022586703993884672 …

Untethered mining operations are also dangerous because you can float off into space. Always secure yourself to a solid object.

Sounds like they think mining on a phone is... a bad call!

I don't understand your objection here... Drawing more current heats the battery, and using the CPU - which is very close to the battery in a smartphone, obviously - also generates heat. Heating a battery too much is likely to reduce its effective life or damage it.

I imagine games do this too and are also bad. But less likely to be running unattended and obvious to the person using the phone how hot it's getting.

Tim, have you not watched the episode of Silicon Valley where the phones blew up due to overheating by Pied Piper’s distributed internet? It happens.

Well they aren't wrong, however someone playing Fortnite for 15 hours straight on their phone would probably have the same effect no? Seems like they took the easy course to deal with background apps mining crypto without the user noticing. Just blanket ban them.

I think crypto mining will finally be the nail in internet security. Back doors will need to be closed or suffer the wraith of 99% CPU/GPU usage!
