I'd argue that the decision in the 90s to allow publishers (and later ad networks) to run arbitrary code on our computers in exchange for not paying for content was an error too.
I don't tend to click ads. The frequency of dodgy hijacky fake ads is low, but the potential consequences are high. If I really want to know more, I Google the thing in the ad and click a link that isn't sponsored. I'm probably excessively paranoid.
This is Apple wanting to raise revenue on services, so this sort of thing emerges. Everything has to be a damned profit center.
