Twitter says “An account may be verified if it is determined to be an account of public interest”. The reality, though, is you need to have a friend at Twitter or do favors for Twitter, and not say things that displease them. This is why Twitter sucks.

Apps were open a while ago, many at Xbox simply filled out the required app and were verified in a matter of days. Not sure if that has changed, but that was a year ago.

Now the process is: fill out a form, and some contractor will make an arbitrary decision on whether they want to grant you the blue check privilege. It’s a betrayal of the word “verification”, which implies verification of identity, a purely objective thing.
