On a positive note, the fact that the NATO secretary-general is publicly urging Germany to continue supporting nuclear weapons reveals its deep concern that such support is diminishing. Sooner or later, US nuclear weapons will be removed from German soil.

When Germany removes US nuclear weapons from its soil, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands will feel great pressure to follow suit. Belgium came close to expelling US nuclear weapons from its territory earlier this year, when a parliamentary motion was narrowly defeated.

There is no legal barrier for a NATO member to reject nuclear weapons and become a state party to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This is the only responsible course of action.
