How would you take on a first draft? What are your tips in how to approach it, especially if you wrote yourself into a corner?
-
It's natural to write yourself into a corner on your first draft as you figure out what works and what doesn't. I guess that's why it's a first draft? So you can then iron out the kinks for the second and third. I'd say knowing where you want to end up is crucial to start.

If I send you a copy of my book will you read it? And a real question: what do you think is the single most important element of a fight scene?
-
I get sent quite a few books, and what I read tends to be depending on what I need to read for research — so I cannot promise I will. I think figuring out where to give detail and where to summarise on any given fight beat is probably the most important.

Do you have any advice for writing for a player? I've been writing scenes and it's full of "You"'s in scenes to the point where it's definitely the most used word and it feels a bit jarring.
-
You only really need the subject to be established once. You don't need to write: "You walk into the castle. You see a chandelier. You watch it fall on you." Instead: "You walk into the castle and see a chandelier. It falls on you."

What are good ways to measure growth/improvement in your writing? I want to be able to set goals that I can work towards, and measure how to get better with my writing.
-
For a lot of people, 'getting better' is writing/finishing a book, which is a pretty measurable goal. I'd read and study books with things you want to emulate, figure out what makes them work, and then implement those in your writing. Then compare — is your writing better?
