As far as I am concerned, if you have a gun you ARE the bad guy.
There are many complete legitimate, functional reasons to own a gun. Many families in Maine feed their household hunting. Many places in Maine are so rural that you may need protection for a considerable time before services can arrive...if you can get a signal to call.
Last time I was there, a legit Bear was walking down Main Street in a city nearby. Freaked me out.
I can’t stand guns, really really don’t like them at all...but if I lived in Maine or even Upper MI, I would have a shotgun.
In other words you might actually encounter a bear in Maine, though probably not at a school.
I hear they don't like glitter and other handicrafts. 
Also they rarely attack unless you get up in their business. They aren't grizzlies or polar bears.
