I don't assign a value or reason to a backward looking message unless there is a benefit moving forward. It's how they feel. Telling someone they or wrong or their logic fails about a feeling is generally counterproductive.
Part of the feeling of being "attacked" is a lot of the strategies on the left as of late are very loud and invasive. There is a desire to get bigger an louder on both sides to shake the other side into understanding that they, in fact, have the right point of view.
To some extent, who is right, or righter, or the rightest, doesn't really matter to fix the problem. We need moderates to come back. We need people who can talk to a variety of perspectives, even through disagreement.
No one is getting rid of the left or the right any time soon, no matter how reprehensible they might be to the other. We have to stop rewarding being so stalwart in position that every line is a reason to walk away. That's how we got to these lines that are frankly ridiculous.
