Can we talk about what we want from Congress?
The more I talk to people, the more it seems like there is a great detachment from what the job should be. Here is what I want from #mycongress.

#Mycongress works in DC M-W most weeks, Th-F are blocked off for reading bills and office hours with constituents, back home if possible.
#Mycongress doesn't do crazy late-night votes. People who are not well-rested make bad decisions.
#Mycongress doesn't rush bad law. Nothing urgent goes through congress, do it right the first time. Make laws only if it improves existing law.
#Mycongress doesn't work weekends. It's a hard job. If you don't reconnect and refresh with family, you forget why you are there.
#Mycongress is not expected to work or campaign every moment of every day, whether or not it's an election season. This is a job that requires balance. We should not reward every waking moment being the job, living like that makes you bad at it.
#Mycongress is not elected based on fundraising at all. We pay attention. We rise people up who should be there. We don't scare people away with the interview process.
Elect people without money and money will no longer hold our system hostage.
#Mycongress rewards people for taking adverse opinions and using the to improve policy instead of shut people down. It rewards collaboration.
#Mycongress does not reward hyper-partisanship. It rips those people from office at the very next election. Congress is Team USA, always.
#Mycongress does not reward short term gain over long term goals. It does not value sneaky against the other side, there IS NO OTHER SIDE. There are differing perspectives towards generally aligned goals.
#Mycongress knows the letter after your name should not change that you want a safe, healthy environment to raise your family in a land governed by laws that are humane and fiscally prudent.
#Mycongress has a ton of time in a regular work week to read bills and connect with constituents because that IS THE JOB. That is the expectation, not the circus we have made it. We need not hold court for donors, we write law. Good law.
#Mycongress is diverse. In opinion, background, and sociographics. Without diversity we get bad law. We get law that hurts people.
#Mycongress has voters that demand a minimum proficiency. Bills are very technical documents. Anyone running should know how to read & understand a bill, which you need not be a lawyer to do. We should have extension learning courses on how to do this, for candidates & voters.
That is one Sunday afternoon cup of tea on #Mycongress.
