I'm curious... what was the response to this letter?
I don't have any responses in my file.
Pretty much what I thought. King is more responsive than the other two (ME2), but anything that doesn't fit neatly in one of the categories listed in their website email forms tends to go unanswered. As mere constituents, I guess, canned position papers are all we're due.
I would guess at that time they also had a massive influx of calls/emails/letters. It's probably really hard to run a congressional office the past year or so, and unlike any time prior. Staffing would be unpleasant when you go from a handful of calls to constantly full voicemail
Realistic expectations and all that jazz. Running an office, I'm not sure I would be able to handle that rapid volume shift well, nor do I know if they have a budget that can stretch that way.
I don't know about staff/budget either, but I do know they listen quite attentively to some people. https://www.bostonfed.org/-/media/Images/CB/commdev/cb/2015/winter/figures/CB-winter15-web-artcle-carnes-chart-2.png …
I have often wondered if the 1st and 14th amd. do not entitle a constituency with the right of equal access to discuss policy as a $80k/yr lobbyist. I have asked the Maine ACLU, but they never answered. Tried an ABA website, too. No luck.
As far as I can tell, case law involving the "right to petition" has centered exclusively on its relationship to "peaceful assembly."
That isn't my area of law so I don't know the answer off the cuff. We have some real problems in the way we balance access to officials...just look at those who block constituents. Unless someone is an obvious bot, bikini-ed "cosplayer" or threatening harm, that's not good form.
It's my belief that the lack of replies confirms that just isn't a lot to point to. Wish I had the resources to mount a court challenge... Even if I did, it's probably an insane amount of effort to satisfy a curiosity.
