He can say whatever he wants but if he acts to discriminate he can be pursued with civil or criminal penalties. The city council can remove him or censure him. If supported by council they all become liable.

I don't know about Maine, but in many states, it depends on why you were terminated - for instance, you don't get benefits for a for cause termination in many states.

If fired 'for cause,' rules may will require that you wait a certain time & (ironically) earn a specified amt of $. Essentially, you work temp or PT to hit the target.
