I wrote in Kasich but would’ve voted for Biden if he had run and got the nomination. I vote for the person, not the party.

I really think closed primaries lead the parties to make isolated decisions in who to put forward. What is appealing to the party may not be attractive to the voter pool. It also leaves independents feeling disenfranchised.

In Maine, unenrolled voters can register for a party on Election Day and vote in whatever primary they choose.

...but you have to pick. So if you really like a D for one race and a R for another, your vote can only count for one of them.

In what world would be not belonging to an organization or even willing to associate with one for a day, get to pick the standard bearers for several groups? Not in politics, civic life, religion, business, labor, anywhere.

The problem is you cannot freely give input on candidates of both parties. Say you want to vote for 1 D and 3 Rs, but the D is slightly more important to you...you are precluded from letting your preference be known on the Rs.

You also can't vote for my synagogue board unless you join the synagogue. Same with my union's membership.

Yeah, but as a non-union atheist, that has nothing to do with me vs a Governor, President, Senator, Congressman who does.

Point is that members of groups make decisions about that group's leaders. People from NH don't vote in ME.

When I started voting, I was in Washington state, which had open primaries. It's a different philosophy. We're probably not going to agree. That's ok. It's my preference, but not the system in Maine and it doesn't bother me enough to lobby to attempt to change it.
