Independents aren’t independent. Nearly all consistently vote with one party.

In what world would be not belonging to an organization or even willing to associate with one for a day, get to pick the standard bearers for several groups? Not in politics, civic life, religion, business, labor, anywhere.
The problem is you cannot freely give input on candidates of both parties. Say you want to vote for 1 D and 3 Rs, but the D is slightly more important to you...you are precluded from letting your preference be known on the Rs.

You also can't vote for my synagogue board unless you join the synagogue. Same with my union's membership.

Yeah, but as a non-union atheist, that has nothing to do with me vs a Governor, President, Senator, Congressman who does.
