Political parties courting independent voters should refrain from defining what their vote “really means”, otherwise you are making it clear from the start that you don’t actually value their voice.

In Maine, unenrolled voters can register for a party on Election Day and vote in whatever primary they choose.
...but you have to pick. So if you really like a D for one race and a R for another, your vote can only count for one of them.
