Political parties courting independent voters should refrain from defining what their vote “really means”, otherwise you are making it clear from the start that you don’t actually value their voice.

I have a sneaking feeling 2018 may be the year moderates and independents rebel, putting reasonable grown ups that aren't far *anything* in office. #mepolitics

Independents aren’t independent. Nearly all consistently vote with one party.

If I average my decades of voting, I vote an evenish split between the two parties, with some independents tossed in. I don't think I have ever voted D for president, either R or I. I match the skills/issues to the scope of the position. If I like no one, I write in. #mepolitics

I wrote in Kasich but would’ve voted for Biden if he had run and got the nomination. I vote for the person, not the party.

I really think closed primaries lead the parties to make isolated decisions in who to put forward. What is appealing to the party may not be attractive to the voter pool. It also leaves independents feeling disenfranchised.

In Maine, unenrolled voters can register for a party on Election Day and vote in whatever primary they choose.

...but you have to pick. So if you really like a D for one race and a R for another, your vote can only count for one of them.
