Political parties courting independent voters should refrain from defining what their vote “really means”, otherwise you are making it clear from the start that you don’t actually value their voice.
If I average my decades of voting, I vote an evenish split between the two parties, with some independents tossed in. I don't think I have ever voted D for president, either R or I. I match the skills/issues to the scope of the position. If I like no one, I write in.

This is totally based on anecdotal evidence, but it seems like the swiftest way to lose an independent voter is to tell them you know how they are going to vote.
