I understand how it currently works, sort of my day job...that's not what it appeared to say in the version of the bill I read. Can you show me where I am wrong?

Currently, we tax when value changes hands, with some exceptions. You can look at inheritance as money that was already taxed, or you can look at it as money moving to a new person. Both are true.

What we should do is produce thoughtful, well-vetted, well-rounded legislation. There is no reason to rush tax reform and risk a hasty-made bill. The situation is neither dire nor emegent. We should have a baseline for how and what we tax, build the bill around that.

I think sales tax works quite well in Washington state...but there are still other taxes in play and it would be a challenge to adopt that model on a federal level. One of the most jarring taxes to me when I moved to Maine was vehicle excise tax.

Instead of rushing to jam through this nonsense, we should be having these theoretical conversations, tagging in economic modeling for impacts, etc THEN producing a fair, balanced, functional tax code based on results. No rush, fully considered, collaborative policy.
