What we should do is produce thoughtful, well-vetted, well-rounded legislation. There is no reason to rush tax reform and risk a hasty-made bill. The situation is neither dire nor emegent. We should have a baseline for how and what we tax, build the bill around that.

Any tax code will have winners and losers. We aren't really suggesting different things here. I think we should determine philosophy why, what and when we should tax, then figure out the rate and any exemptions and deductions. That is not what the tax bill did.

I think sales tax works quite well in Washington state...but there are still other taxes in play and it would be a challenge to adopt that model on a federal level. One of the most jarring taxes to me when I moved to Maine was vehicle excise tax.
